Support group meetings
There are many cancer support groups available in English speaking communities. However, in my area, residents speak mainly Spanish and Portuguese. Due to cultural differences, a language barrier, and an overall ignorance of the services available to them, many non-English speaking cancer patients suffer in silence and do not know who to turn to for support, help, and guidance.
Through the years, I have met or spoken with many people who share in my mission of personally helping cancer patients. Emma Quintana is one of these special individuals. Ms. Quintana, a breast cancer survivor herself, is the founder of the support group "Mujeres Valientes" or "Brave Women", established in 2003.
Originally from Peru, Emma was quick to recognize the need for a group providing help and support to Spanish speakers. Initially, the group was intended to provide emotional and spiritual support to breast cancer survivors only. It grew and expanded its mission to also meet the needs of patients affected by other types of cancer. The group also had many Portuguese members.
Due to a combination of enforceable personal issues and circumstantial developments, after meeting regularly, on the last Friday of every month, for the past 13 consecutive years, by unanimous voting, all the key members recently decided to dissolve the group and stop the monthly meetings. Through the years, the group was made up of cancer patients, cancer survivors, and also friends and family members who attended meetings and activities in support of their loved ones in their fight against cancer.
It is has been a great honor for me to have had the opportunity to sponsor the activities of this support group for the past 10 years, or so. Although the group will no longer have formal meetings, all these wonderful people have become like family to me, and I have no doubts that the bond we have created will live on for many years to come. The Angel Lucy Wellness Project will continue to help the members of the "Mujeres Valientes" support group in any way possible. And I look forward to the opportunity to keep in touch through less formal, more social and family-oriented activities and events.
